Spirituality as a potential protective factor against the pressure of romantic ideals in social media

Social media play an increasingly significant role in shaping perceptions of romantic relationships, often promoting idealized and selectively presented images of them. Exposure to content portraying seemingly perfect relationships may encourage the internalization of unrealistic standards regarding intimacy, attractiveness, and relationship satisfaction, while also intensifying tendencies toward social comparison. Consequently, these phenomena may be associated with reduced psychological well-being, higher levels of frustration, and increased dissatisfaction with one’s own interpersonal relationships.

The aim of this presentation is to discuss the potential role of spirituality as a protective factor against the internalization of romantic ideals present in social media. Particular attention will be devoted to the ways in which spirituality, understood as a source of meaning, reflection, and inner stability, may influence the interpretation of online content and reduce susceptibility to social pressure and unrealistic expectations regarding romantic relationships.

The presentation will also introduce a research project examining the relationships between levels of spirituality, the internalization of romantic ideals, and the tendency toward social comparison in the context of social media use. Both the theoretical foundations of the project and its potential practical implications for psychoeducational activities and the promotion of psychological well-being among young adults will be discussed.

The presentation reflects on whether spirituality may support greater emotional autonomy, a more realistic perception of relationships, and a reduced impact of norms and pressures created within online spaces.
