The aim of this paper is to analyze the role of spirituality as a mechanism integrating the identity of an individual confronted with the phenomena of multiphrenia and social anomie. In the era of “liquid modernity,” the individual is subjected to a continuous process of social saturation, which Kenneth Gergen described as multifrenia — a state of fragmented and “blended” identity resulting from an excess of social roles, expectations, and potentialities. This phenomenon, when accompanied by anomie (the absence of stable axiological reference points), may lead to a specific form of paralysis rooted in excessive possibilities, as well as to a chronic sense of meaninglessness.

The paper is based on a literature review and integrates contributions from existential psychology, post-industrial sociology, and the psychology of religion and spirituality. The analysis focuses on the tension between the “fragmented self” and the human need for authenticity and existential coherence. Particular attention is devoted to the phenomenon of cognitive paralysis arising from the paradox of availability — a situation in which an excess of opportunities becomes a source of stress and existential dizziness.

The findings of the analysis indicate that spirituality functions as an important buffer mitigating the negative effects of multiphrenia. The literature review supports the conclusion that, while a culture of excess promotes fragmentation and dispersion, spirituality provides a framework that enables the hierarchization of values and the restoration of personal agency. In the face of modern excess, spirituality constitutes an essential remedy, allowing individuals to move from a paralyzing state of constant hesitation toward an integrated identity and the rediscovery of authentic meaning within contemporary reality.
