The death of a child in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and in palliative care is a critical experience with medical, psychological, and spiritual dimensions. The aim of this presentation is to analyze the health and spiritual implications of the dying process in both models of care. The differences between life-sustaining therapy and a palliative approach, focused on alleviating suffering and supporting the family, will be discussed, with particular emphasis on health consequences (including traumatic stress and bereavement) and the role of spiritual support. The conclusions emphasize the need for holistic, interdisciplinary care in a child’s end-of-life situation.
